Small Business Digital Marketing in 2019 for Beginners
Updated: Jun 26, 2019
With the numerous ways that small businesses are run, there can be an overwhelming amount of methods to approach digital marketing. This especially holds true when you take into account the variety of tools, and resources that are available.
FIND YOUR EXACT NEED
You want to start out by finding your exact need. The best way to do this is to take a day or two or even three, where you can really just brainstorm what you think is wrong with your business and think about what your current competitors are doing that you aren't. Chances are if customers are going somewhere else to get the same product, it simply means something(s) that you're not offering as business and you need to really understand what that is. It’s very crucial so that you begin to understand exactly what you think your business needs help with. Awareness is always the first step to a problem, especially when it comes to digital marketing.
UNDERSTAND YOUR AUDIENCE
When it comes to understanding your audience, it's definitely important to essentially take a step back and put yourself in the shoes of one of your customers. Take another step back and put yourself in the shoes of a customer that is absolutely not happy with what you're offering whether it be a product service or even a customer experience. the last thing you need to do is take an even further step back and think about what the ideal customer whom is completely happy with everything might say, and/or expect that customer to feel. You're going to want to try to think about what avenues might be available to get a customer from extremely dissatisfied to madly in love with you. Your greatest asset as a business owner are happy and loyal customers
FORMULATE A PLAN
This step can be a bit tricky. You want to formulate a plan that works just right for you, but doesn't compromise yourself. What makes it tricky is how can one know that a plan works in the first place!? You need to test it out, but we'll get to that a little bit later. Formulating a plan is always a little difficult, but alternatively can sometimes be easier than you think it is. The reason for that is because you're going to have plenty of ideas running through your head and also some doubt flying in and out your ear. Don't worry, it's natural as a person and as a business owner to be concerned. What you need to do is realize that by formulating a plan, you're beginning to learn self accountability as a whole, but also laying out a roadmap that begins to connect the spaces in between where you are currently and where you're trying to get to. A change like this one doesn't magically happen, it needs to be actively thought about for just about everyone. For some internet marketers it has to be visualized on paper and others it comes to them in a flash moment of brilliance. It doesn't matter how you formulate this plan, but you need to make sure that you do don't sell yourself short. The sky’s the limit here. Just make sure when it comes down to executing these plans, you have respect for how big your goals are and what it's going to take from your life to get there.
What's helped my team and I in the past is using Google's app Primer. It offers free bite sized information and templates around business planning and marketing. Using an app like this is a simple and free tool that can help streamline a range of good ideas. It's available on the Google Play and App Stores.
USE ONLINE TOOLS & RESOURCES (FREE & PAID)
Right now in 2019 there is a plethora of tools that you can use as a social media marketing agency (SMMA) or digital marketer. Both free and paid resources can conveniently speed up how you can interact and satisfy your customers. The best analogy to highlight this segment is that this is no different than learning how to use a power screwdriver tool. Yes at first glance it's instantly more complicated than using a normal screwdriver but 5 seconds into using that power tool you realize this is infinitely better than using a normal screwdriver. same concept for online marketers, but just dressed up a little bit differently. Take the time to learn these by messing around with them. For almost every tool that exists there's a wide range of YouTube videos associated with it that you can watch in your off time. Don’t forget you're doing all this to help your business grow and in turn make yourself a lot more money. Any increased revenue or profit stemming from keeping your customers happy and making their experience convenient comes with guarantees. This will make your life a lot easier and kickstart your financial goals a lot quicker.

TRIAL & ERROR
This is essentially the bread and butter of this article and digital marketing itself. how do you know that your car works in the morning? well it's pretty simple, you put the key in the ignition and you turn it on. You never know if that car works if you didn't try and test to see if it actually works. it’s the same thing with online marketing campaigns. whether it be testing the creatives, hiring an expert, or even just doing it putting all the work on your own shoulders, you will have to test and see what works. Don't test and forget, then think after one day and nothing's working. starting an SEO campaign is going to take a lot longer than simply hiring a Facebook ads expert. Even then, it will take you some time to get some data set up for the pixel, and run different creatives that maybe get the initial conversions and awareness that you're looking for. There's a lot that goes into this, you have to get your toes wet before you can just jump right in the ocean, but that's part of the beauty to it all. Slow and steady can win this race. Take your time to test what works, test what doesn't work, compare the two and see where you can improve and evaluate what might have gone wrong. This is why finding your needs, understanding your audience, executing a plan, and boosting your efficiency with the endless amount of resources and software at your disposal will jumpstart anyone as a beginner.
The one key aspect when it comes to digital marketing is testing. No matter what your strategy is or how much you intend to spend on advertising and marketing, trying new methods of engaging customers is the backbone to it all. You need to be able to compare what sort of implementation works well vs is actively crushing your competition. Most of the time this involves trying channels, social platforms, or hiring experts to help evaluate data or feedback to see what makes your business thrive. This process is almost guaranteed to take some time, but that is why the rewards are always worth the wait.
